The Write Focus

I must confess that I haven't been diligent with my writing this year. I can make rationalizations, and some would probably be plausible. But I don't like to make excuses.
The truth is that I simply haven't been that focused. I have written a draft for one short story and started two others. I also have notes for about eight other stories. So I have made some progress.  Just not enough.
My intention at the beginning of 2013 was to write one short story a week for about three or four months. I thought I'd be able to produce 15 or so stories. Then I would spend the next few months editing, revising, and polishing them for publication.
I know it's still early in the year but I need to get my moving if I'm going to reach my goals. I also have my National Novel Writing Month manuscript on my desktop that needs attention as well.
Sometimes telling others (as I'm doing with this post) will jumpstart serious writing. I certainly hope so.
Until the next time…

  1. Every time a new year rolls around, I set goals. And every year, I procrastinate because I think I've got plenty of time--hey, a whole year, right. But time slips away so quickly and before I know it, I'm wondering where the year went and why I didn't accomplish my goals. I'm not making the same mistake this year. I set my goals and I've been working toward them every day. Best of all, I feel good about writing and I can see my daily progress.

Best of luck, Michael! I hope you accomplish all your goals. :o)

  2. I hope you reach your goals, Devon. The main problem I have is that sometimes life gets in the way. Those unpredictable events can eat away at that precious time a person sets aside for writing. Good luck!

  3. I find myself without focus for a couple of weeks after the holiday hustle. For this reason, I don't set goals for myself for January, therefore easing that old guilt feeling! I am sure you will get on schedule and without a doubt reach at least some of those hefty goals you have set for yourself! Good luck!

  4. Thanks, Sandie. I actually did some writing today. It's great to have goals even if you don't reach them. They give some purpose and meaning to life.

  5. I really hope you acomplish all your goals Michael, but to write one story a week is not easy! (i write fairytales for a website and i have been writing one story a week for the past 2 years, so take your time) and writers need a great deal of inspiration, not just to focus.
so, don´t be too hard on yourself, when you get your momentum, make the most of it! and enjoy your writing, is the most important thing! xoxo eliz

  6. Thanks for the advice, Elizabeth. I'm sure I'll get back in the swing of things as the weather gets warmer here. Have a great weekend!
